Abbey Quarter Temporary Bus/Car Park

Overview

Project: Abbey Quarter Temporary Bus/Car Park
Value: €630,000
Duration: March 2022 – July 2022
Client: Kilkenny County Council

Background

This project involved the rapid development of a strategic temporary transport hub in Kilkenny’s historic Abbey Quarter, designed to support ongoing urban regeneration while maintaining essential services during redevelopment.

Located at St Canices Place, the scheme transformed a brownfield site into a fully serviced multi-modal facility accommodating both public transport and private vehicles.

The project required careful integration with sensitive historical surroundings and existing infrastructure, including works adjacent to the protected River Nore environment. The temporary facility was essential for maintaining parking capacity and public transport operations during the larger Abbey Quarter redevelopment, while incorporating modern amenities including EV charging infrastructure and enhanced pedestrian facilities to serve both commuters and visitors to the historic city center.

Key Achievements

  • Constructed 8 dedicated bus bays with full road markings and signage
  • Installed 5,095m² of asphalt pavement across carpark and access roads
  • Laid 300m of service ducting for EV chargers and public lighting
  • Built 200m of various fencing types including lap-boarded and palisade
  • Installed 7 public lighting columns and complete drainage system
  • Implemented full traffic management system with barriers and bollards

Project Outcome

  • Completed complex urban carpark €151,799 over original budget due to archaeological requirements
  • Successfully managed works adjacent to River Nore with full environmental compliance
  • Integrated EV charging infrastructure and ESB substation for future-ready facilities
  • Maintained operations on busy arterial route throughout construction phase
