Background
This project involved the construction and lining of a new coal ash containment cell at Kilroot Power Station to replace capacity from the previous cell constructed by PCL in 2015, which had reached near-maximum capacity.
The works required careful coordination within the operational power station environment, including adapting to radiation testing schedules and strict site security protocols while delivering critical waste management infrastructure.
Key Achievements
- Installed complete geosynthetic lining system including GCL and 2mm HDPE geomembrane
- Constructed leachate drainage system with collection sump and monitoring infrastructure
- Deployed 300mm gravel drainage blanket with filter geotextile
- Completed leak detection testing to verify lining integrity
