Background
The project transformed a disused former railway site in Foxrock into a modern public carpark to alleviate severe parking shortages in the village. The site, historically part of the Harcourt Street line serving Leopardstown Racecourse, had become derelict and subject to fly-tipping.
The redevelopment restored active use to the brownfield site while preserving historical elements including the original railway ticket booth.
Key Achievements
- Constructed 1,800m² of bituminous paving for new parking areas
- Installed 800m of kerbing and 460m of concrete footpaths
- Laid 250m of twin-wall drainage (150mm–450mm diameter) with manholes and gullies
- Built 620m of block and granite walls and installed 700m of service ducts
- Processed and removed 20 loads of waste material from site
- Restored and preserved the historic railway ticket booth structure
- Installed electric vehicle charging points and Garda surveillance camera
Project Outcome
- Completed project under original contract value despite complex site constraints
- Implemented on-site waste processing to reduce disposal costs and transport
- Protected critical 19th century water infrastructure with 180m³ of reinforced concrete slabs
- Maintained full stakeholder engagement throughout construction period
- Applied “9 Principles of Prevention” to deliver project with zero safety incidents
- Successfully integrated modern amenities while preserving historical character
