Background
This project involved the design and construction of new segregated cycle lanes along Hyde Road, a critical urban corridor in Limerick City. The scheme formed a vital link in Limerick’s active travel network, connecting existing cycle facilities on Careys Road with the newly planned cycle routes on Childers Road.
By providing safe, continuous, and high-quality cycling infrastructure, the project aimed to encourage modal shift, reduce vehicular congestion, and support the city’s sustainability goals. Works were carried out along a live single-lane carriageway, requiring careful phasing and public liaison to maintain access for residents, businesses, and public transport throughout the construction period.
Key Achievements
- Constructed 4,800m² of new cycle tracks with full carriageway resurfacing (8,000m²)
- Installed 3,020m of extruded and precast kerbing including 84m of Kassel Kerbs at bus stops
- Laid 2,500m of drainage pipes serving 70 gully pots
- Installed new traffic signals at 2 busy junctions and pedestrian crossings
- Executed 1,286m³ of excavation and milling works
- Installed complete traffic ducting system with chambers for ESB connections
