N63 Ballinalee Road Active Travel Scheme

Overview

Project: N63 Ballinalee Road Active Travel Scheme

Value: €2.1 million

Duration: 32 Weeks

Client: Longford County Council

Background

This project was a key initiative under Ireland’s Active Travel Scheme, commissioned to enhance pedestrian and cycling infrastructure along the N63 Ballinalee Road in Longford.

The objective was to promote safer, healthier, and more sustainable transport options for local residents. Key challenges included managing high traffic volumes, minimising disruption to local schools and businesses, and integrating new infrastructure within complex existing road layouts.

Key Achievements

  • Over 3,100m² of reinforced concrete footpaths finished with high-quality, trip-resistant surfaces.
  • 3,000m² of red tarmac cycle track constructed using high PSV materials for durability and visibility.
  • Installation of 19 concrete gullies and 160 metres of drainage pipes for effective stormwater management.
  • Reuse of 1,100m³ of excavated topsoil on-site, reducing waste and transport emissions.
  • Installation of 30 new energy-efficient LED lighting columns, supported by 1,675 metres of power cabling and 1,250 metres of ducting.
  • Successful implementation of a phased traffic management plan, maintaining access and minimising disruption.
  • Construction of a new pedestrian crossing with tactile paving to enhance community safety.
  • Installation of over 550 metres of precast concrete kerbing and construction of timber sleeper retaining walls to manage elevation and delineate spaces.

Results – Engineering Excellence & Sustainable Value

  • Eliminated concrete kerbs by using compacted sidewalls, reducing material and cost without compromising quality.

  • Reused 1,100m³ of excavated topsoil on-site, cutting transport emissions and minimising waste.

  • Phased traffic management around school and business schedules to maintain flow and minimise disruption.

  • Sequenced lighting upgrades for immediate LED activation, ensuring no safety downtime
