Background
This project involved the construction of a new engineered landfill cell (Phase 8) at the Nether Dallachy facility near Spey Bay, Scotland, while integrating containment systems with the adjacent Phase 7b area.
The works required advanced engineering to create environmentally secure containment and ensure regulatory compliance for waste management operations in Northeast Scotland.
Key Achievements
- Constructed Phase 8 landfill cell with complete lining system integration to Phase 7b
- Installed Bentonite Enhanced Soil (BES) liner meeting permeability requirement of ≤5.0×10⁻¹¹ m/sec
- Completed 204m³ BES trial panel to validate installation methods and mix design
- Installed 2.00mm HDPE geomembrane primary liner with protection geotextile and drainage systems
- Conducted geophysical leak detection testing to verify liner integrity
- Provided permanent litter fencing along southern, eastern and western boundaries
Project Outcome
- Delivered project £256,896 under original contract value
- Successfully validated BES performance through comprehensive trial panel testing
- Maintained environmental compliance through rigorous quality assurance protocols
