Background
This project involved the comprehensive remediation of a historic private landfill site located in a residential area south of Clane village. The works transformed a former quarry that had been used for waste disposal into a safe, stable landscape with new equestrian facilities and enhanced ecological value.
Key Achievements
- Remediated 1-hectare legacy landfill through excavation and regrading of 2,000m³ material
- Installed passive gas venting system with vertical trenches and lateral collection pipework
- Constructed 470m of surface water filter drains (100mm & 150mm diameter)
- Placed 3,500m³ of imported subsoil and topsoil capping material over geocomposite layer
- Built new 1,050m² equestrian arena and 581m of fencing (post & rail and chainlink)
- Completed landscaping with grass seeding and new tree planting including cherry blossom, beech and horse chestnut
Project Outcome
- Successfully transformed former landfill into safe, usable community space
- Enhanced local biodiversity through strategic tree planting and landscaping
- Provided new equestrian facilities for community use
- Ensured long-term environmental protection through engineered gas venting system
- Maintained residential access and minimised disruption in sensitive location
