Background
This project involved critical expansion works at a live operational waste management facility in Northern Ireland, comprising two key elements: construction of a new engineered landfill cell (Cell 9) and capping of completed landfill areas.
The works extended the facility’s operational capacity while ensuring environmental compliance through advanced lining systems and proper closure of filled cells, all while maintaining uninterrupted daily operations of the active landfill and recycling facility.
Key Achievements
- Constructed new Cell 9 with 6,000m³ excavation and 500mm engineered clay liner
- Installed 8,500m² of geosynthetic lining system including GCL and HDPE geomembranes
- Laid 653m of HDPE leachate collection pipework and drainage systems
- Completed capping works over Cells 4 and 6 with LLDPE geomembrane and geocomposite drainage
- Placed 900mm subsoil restoration layer over capped areas
- Managed complex interface with live landfill operations and heavy traffic flows
Project Outcome
- Delivered project on time and within original £1.8 million budget
- Successfully maintained full landfill operations throughout construction period
- Implemented value engineering by lowering formation level to source sufficient clay material on-site
- Utilised digital plant management system for real-time maintenance and reporting
- Achieved all environmental compliance standards under independent CQA supervision
